Can you believe? A doctor gives beer to a dying man and saves him.
Nguyen Van Nhat, 48, had 15 cans of beer pumped into him at General Hospital in Vietnam in order to save his life. He passed out after the methanol levels in his body were found to be 1,119 times higher than the permissible limit.
Methanol in his body oxidised to formaldehyde which further turned into formic acid, proving fatal for him.
To save his life, doctors immediately transfused three cans of beer to slow down his liver’s processing of methanol. According to Dr Lam, one can of beer was given to Nhat every hour and after 15 cans were administered the patient was completely conscious.
Simply put, Doctors needed time to perform dialysis, and therefore they resorted to the use of beer.
